Most CV advice is aesthetic. The parts that actually change outcomes are structural — whether software can read the file, and whether a human can find the relevant thing in six seconds.
Many employers run applications through applicant tracking software that parses the file into fields. Layouts that break parsing: multi-column designs (text is read across columns), text inside images or graphics, tables, headers and footers containing contact details, and unusual section names.
A single-column layout with conventional headings — Experience, Education, Skills — parses reliably. Save that as PDF unless the posting asks for something else.
One page early in a career, two once you have enough relevant work that cutting would remove substance. Length is not the real question — relevance is. Three pages listing everything you have ever done reads as an inability to prioritise.
The test for each line: would removing it make the reader less likely to interview you? If not, it is taking space from something that would.
Outcome, not duty. "Responsible for social media" describes a job description; "Grew newsletter from 400 to 5,000 subscribers in eight months" describes a person who did something.
Numbers do the heavy lifting even when they are modest. If you cannot measure the outcome, describe the scale — how many people, how often, how large.
PDF unless told otherwise. It preserves your layout on every device, where a Word file can reflow badly depending on the reader's fonts and version.
Two details: make sure the text is real text rather than an exported image, or parsers see a blank page. And name the file properly — Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf, not cv-final-v3.pdf.
