Image Compressor — shrink JPG and PNG in your browser
Make photos smaller without uploading them anywhere. Choose a quality level, see the saving, download.
Choose images
Your files never leave this page. The work happens in your browser.
Why images are so big
A photo from a modern phone is 12 megapixels or more. Stored as JPEG at full quality that is three to six megabytes. Most of that detail is invisible once the image is viewed on a screen, attached to an email or posted to a website.
Compression works by throwing away the detail your eye is least likely to notice. At 75% quality most photographs lose around two thirds of their file size and look identical at normal viewing size. Below about 50% you start to see blocky edges around sharp lines and text.
Resize first, compress second
If the image will be displayed at 1200 pixels wide, storing 4000 pixels is wasted weight. Setting the longest edge before compressing usually saves more than any quality setting: a 4000 pixel photo reduced to 1600 pixels is already about six times smaller.
JPEG or PNG
Use JPEG for photographs. Use PNG only when you need a transparent background or when the image is a screenshot of text and sharp lines, where JPEG artefacts are visible. This tool writes JPEG, because that is what makes photos small; a PNG with transparency is kept as PNG.
What this tool does not do
It does not strip metadata selectively, and it does not re-encode HEIC files that the browser cannot read. If a file does not open here, convert it to JPEG on the device first.
