Why conversions go wrong

Most mistakes are not arithmetic, they are unit confusion. A "ton" is 1000 kg in the metric world, 907 kg in the United States and 1016 kg in the United Kingdom. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, an imperial gallon is 4.546. This tool uses the metric definitions and the US customary definitions, which is what you want unless a document explicitly says imperial.

Temperature is not a ratio

Length and weight scale from zero, so doubling the number doubles the quantity. Temperature does not: 20 °C is not twice as warm as 10 °C, because the zero point is arbitrary. That is why temperature needs its own formula rather than a multiplier.

Bytes: 1000 or 1024

Storage makers count a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems usually count 1,073,741,824. That 7% gap is why a "500 GB" disk shows up as 465 GB. This tool uses the binary (1024) convention, the one your computer reports.
