Limits worth knowing
App Store description: 4000 characters. App subtitle: 30. Promotional text: 170. X post: 280. Instagram caption: 2200. Meta description for Google: around 155 characters before it gets cut. This tool counts characters the same way those fields do, including spaces.
Words versus characters
A word here is a run of characters separated by whitespace, which is how most editors count. Turkish and German produce longer words than English, so a 500-word Turkish text is noticeably longer in characters than the same text in English. If a platform limits characters, trust the character count, not the word count.
Reading time
The estimate uses 200 words per minute, the common average for silent reading of ordinary prose. Technical text runs slower, around 150.
