Offline translation is a genuinely different technology from the online kind, with different trade-offs. Knowing what changes when the network goes away tells you when to trust it.
A language pack is a compressed neural model stored on your phone. Once downloaded, translation runs on the device's own processor — nothing is sent anywhere, which is why it keeps working on a plane or in a foreign country with no data plan.
The trade-off is size and nuance: an offline model is much smaller than a server model, so it handles everyday sentences well and long, idiomatic or highly technical text less well.
