Why does my voice sound different in recordings?

Because you normally hear your voice through two paths at once, and a recording removes one of them. Sound reaches you through the air like anyone else's voice, but it also travels through the bones of your skull directly to the inner ear. Bone conduction carries low frequencies far better than air, so the voice in your head is deeper and fuller than the one on the recording. The recording is the accurate one — it is what everyone else has always heard.

Why the recorded version sounds thin to you

The missing bass is not a fault of the microphone. Losing the bone-conducted path removes the low end you are used to, and the result registers as thinner and higher. People commonly describe it as sounding nasal or childish, which says more about the comparison than about the voice.

The discomfort fades with exposure. Anyone who records regularly stops noticing within a few weeks — the brain simply updates its reference.

What the microphone adds on top

Distance and room. A phone held at arm's length picks up a lot of the room and comparatively little of you, which flattens the voice further. Getting closer restores much of the warmth people think they are missing.

Cheap microphones also emphasise the 2–4 kHz range, where speech clarity lives — helpful for intelligibility, unflattering for tone.

What actually changes how you sound to others

Posture and breath, more than anything technical. Speaking with the chest open and the head level produces a fuller sound than the slight forward hunch most people adopt in front of a screen.

Speed matters too. Almost everyone speaks faster when recorded than they think they do, and slowing down is the single most reliable improvement to how a recording is received.
