Pregnancy generates an enormous volume of conflicting advice. This covers only what is general and well established — anything about your own pregnancy belongs with your midwife or doctor, who knows your history.
From the first day of your last menstrual period, not from conception. That means you are counted as roughly two weeks pregnant at the moment of conception — a convention that confuses almost everyone at first.
It exists because the LMP date is knowable and the conception date usually is not. An early ultrasound measurement is more accurate and is what clinicians use to adjust the due date when the two disagree.
Not very, as a date. It is a midpoint: only a small minority of babies arrive on it, and term covers a multi-week range. Treating it as a deadline creates unnecessary stress in the final weeks.
It is genuinely useful as a reference point for scheduling tests and tracking growth — just not as a prediction of one particular day.
Appointment dates and test results, questions as they occur to you, and symptoms with their timing. The questions matter more than people expect — appointments are short and it is easy to walk out having forgotten the thing you meant to ask.
Later in pregnancy, clinicians often ask about patterns of fetal movement. A written record beats recollection.
Any bleeding, severe or persistent pain, a noticeable change in fetal movement, severe headache with visual changes, or fever. These are not things to research online first — maternity units expect these calls and would rather have them.
The general rule from midwives is worth repeating: if something feels wrong, call. Being reassured costs a phone call.
