How do you photograph a document so it looks scanned?
Why flash usually makes it worse
Direct flash creates a bright hotspot in the middle and dark edges, and on glossy paper it reflects straight back into the lens. Diffuse daylight beats flash almost every time. If the room is genuinely dark, bouncing a lamp off a wall or ceiling is better than pointing anything at the page.
What makes a document photo unusable
Blur is the main one, and it is often motion rather than focus — hold your breath and brace your elbows. After that: cropped corners, a shadow over text, and creases that cast their own shadows. Flattening the page under a sheet of glass fixes more than any software setting.
Getting it accepted
Many institutions require a PDF rather than a photo, and specify a maximum file size. Convert the image to PDF rather than sending a JPEG, and check that the text is readable at 100 % zoom before you submit. If you plan to make it searchable with OCR, do that before compressing — compression degrades recognition.

- Put the page on a contrasting surface
A white page on a dark table lets the edge detection find the boundary. - Light it from the side, not from above you
Your own shadow is the most common ruin. A window to the side works better than overhead light. - Hold the camera flat above the page
Parallel, not tilted. Correcting perspective afterwards always softens the text. - Check the corners before you move on
A missing corner means a rejected form. It is a five-second check.
