Why do my video calls break up when my internet speed is fine?

Almost always jitter, not speed. Jitter is the variation in your ping. A steady 40 ms connection is fine; one bouncing between 20 ms and 200 ms is not, even though the average looks acceptable. Voice and video need packets arriving evenly spaced — when they do not, the app either waits (delay) or discards them (robotic audio, frozen frames). A download speed test never reveals this.

The three numbers, and what each one governs

Download decides streaming and page loads. Upload decides how you look and sound to other people on a call — it is the number most people never check and the one that ruins meetings. Ping is the round-trip delay, and it governs how responsive everything feels.

A connection with fast download and high ping still feels slow, because every request waits before the fast part begins. That combination explains most "my internet is fast but the internet is slow" complaints.

What causes jitter

Usually congestion — either on your own network (someone streaming or a large upload running) or on the path beyond it during peak hours. Wi-Fi adds its own: interference from neighbouring networks, distance from the router, and the way Wi-Fi shares airtime between devices.

A quick diagnostic: run a test on Wi-Fi, then the same test on cellular in the same spot. If cellular is stable and Wi-Fi is not, the problem is inside your home, not with your provider.

How much speed a call actually needs

Less than people assume — roughly 3 Mbps in each direction for a video call. A gigabit plan does not make a single call better. What helps is a stable path: wired if possible, 5 GHz Wi-Fi if not, and nothing large uploading in the background.
